Spend a Lot on Your Wedding? You'll Probably Get Divorced, Study Says

Don't get mad at us. Economics professors studied this.

Save money — and your marriage.

Two economics professors, Andrew Francis-Tan and Hugo Mialon, surveyed 3,000 married people asking how much they’d spent on their weddings, and found there were a few clues that led straight to divorce.

What they found was the amount that couples spend on an engagement ring and the ceremony is directly related to the length of the marriage. With rings, the more expensive the bling, the more likely the couple was to divorce. If the ring was over $2,000, the likelihood of divorce increased.

“Specifically, in the sample of men, spending between $2,000 and $4,000 (£3,000) on an engagement ring is associated with 1.3 times greater hazard of divorce as compared to spending between $500 (£376) and $2,000,” said the report.

As for the actual ceremony, weddings that cost less than $1,000 lowered the likelihood of divorce and weddings costing more than $20,000 increasing the likelihood by 1.6 times.

A third factor that contributed to a high divorce risk was how much a partner cares about looks—as in don’t grow old or else.

“Reporting that one’s partner’s looks were important in the decision to marry is significantly associated with shorter marriage duration,” Professor Mialon told The Independent.

One thing that lowered the chance of divorce? Going on a honeymoon.

Maybe because after you blow money on a nice trip, you’ve got nothing left for the divorce lawyer?
