Could This Be the Plot of Legally Blonde 3? Alanna Ubach Already Has Some Ideas

Here's what the Legally Blonde star thinks could happen in the upcoming sequel.

It's really happening! After reports broke earlier this month that Reese Witherspoon would be reprising her role as Elle Woods in a third installment of Legally Blonde, the Oscar winner confirmed that Legally Blonde 3 will, in fact, be hitting theaters. And she did so in classic Elle style with an Instagram post featuring a video of Witherspoon floating in the pool while wearing a pink sparkly bikini, à la Elle's Harvard Law School admissions video in Legally Blonde

In addition to reprising her role as Elle in Legally Blonde 3, Witherspoon will also produce the film through her Hello Sunshine production company. The writers behind Legally Blonde, Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith and Karen McCullah, will also return to pen the third installment, MGM confirmed, according to Variety. No director is currently attached to the project.

It’s true... #LegallyBlonde3

There haven't been any other announcements regarding casting for Legally Blonde 3, but Alanna Ubach, who starred as Serena, one of Elle's BFFs in Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, said she would definitely love to be a part of the upcoming movie when The Daily Dish caught up with her in New York on Thursday. "I haven't gotten a call yet, but I do know about it, and I am friends with a couple of people that are involved with it, so we'll see. We'll see," she said. "Only time will tell."

Whether or not she's a part of Legally Blonde 3, Ubach, who you can see in the final season of Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce Thursdays at 10/9c, is "so excited" to see these characters back on the big screen. "This is gonna be amazing. Karen McCullah, Kiwi Smith, they really have their thumbs on the pulse of everything zeitgeist-y," she said. "And so it's gonna be interesting to see what they have in store for these characters that are now gonna be in their 40s."

When asked where she thinks the Legally Blonde squad is now, 15 years after the first sequel hit theaters, Ubach guessed, "All divorced. There's gonna be a big divorce party. We all just get wasted and don't know what happened the night before. Maybe someone gets arrested. It could be a lot of fun."

Hmmm, that certainly sounds like an intriguing jumping off point as any for Legally Blonde 3! Did you hear that, Witherspoon?

Whatever happens in Legally Blonde 3, here's hoping that it will be just as impactful as the original film. "It changed the entire physiology of the twentysomething brain, just being acutely aware of the fact that blondes can be smart, they can be Harvard-educated, they can be sexy, they can be fashion-forward, they can be popular, they can have their own sorority, they can be feminine, they can be tough, and they can have fun. So it really did say a lot. And I love a fish-out-of-water story, obviously," Ubach said of Legally Blonde's lasting impact. "It was such a beautiful story in the end. And what it symbolized for us and our generation in that women are capable of doing anything they put their minds to, and that said a lot about that. We were just so happy to be a part of something that was such a huge part of American pop culture."

Though Ubach said she never imagined Elle's saga would continue, she said there has never been a more perfect time to have more Legally Blonde in the world. "Now with the whole #MeToo movement that's going on right now, I am woman, hear me roar, Legally Blonde has to come back! It's such perfect timing," she shared. "A couple years back, I heard them talking about it and thought, 'OK, that would be kind of cute or whatever,' but now's the time."

We couldn't agree more.

You can catch more Ubach in the final season of GG2D Thursdays at 10/9c.
